OmniVision has announced a 16-Megapixel sensors that they claim are capable of capturing 4608 x 3456 at 30 fps or 4K2K (3840 x 2160) at 60 fps (!) for use in still and video cameras as well as high end mobile phones. So far, we haven't heard any news of the chip being incorporated into any specific device, but the fact that it's possible is. According to a well-known tipster on Weibo, the Honor 30 series may use OmniVision OV48C mobile sensor. The OV48C is the industry’s first image sensor for high-resolution mobile cameras with on-chip dual conversion gain HDR, which eliminates motion artifacts and produces an excellent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). OmniVision Technologies (News - Alert), Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced in advance of CES (News - Alert) the OV40A, a 40MP, 1.0 micron pixel image sensor that features super high gain and de-noise technologies for the best-in-class low-light camera performance in the 1/1.7' optical format. This sensor also offers multiple high dynamic range (HDR) options for the best quality still and video captures. Additionally, it supports 1080p slow-motion and high-speed video captures at 240 frames per second (fps) with phase-detection autofocus.

'TSR (News - Alert) estimates there will be 855 million image sensors with 40MP or higher resolution shipped to smartphone manufacturers in 2021, which presents a huge opportunity for this new image sensor,' said James Liu, senior technical marketing manager at OmniVision. 'The OV40A's unique combination of features is bringing flagship-level performance to the main, wide, ultrawide and vdeo cameras in this fast-growing market segment.'

The OV40A is designed for best-in-class performance with many industrial, cutting-edge technologies. It supports super high gain of up to 256x, and is embedded with multi-sampling de-noise functionality for enhanced low-light performance. This sensor also offers excellent HDR (News - Alert) through selective conversion gain for the optimum balance between low-light image quality and HDR, along with 2- and 3-exposure staggered HDR timing. These features provide designers with maximum flexibility to select the best HDR method for the contrasting light and dark areas in a given scene.

Built on OmniVision's PureCel® Plus-S stacked die technology, the OV40A integrates an on-chip, 4-cell (4C) color filter array and hardware remosaic, which provides high quality, 40MP Bayer output in real time. For low-light conditions, this sensor can use near-pixel binning to output a 10MP image, as well as 4K2K and 1080p video, with four times the sensitivity, yielding 2.0 micron pixel-equivalent low-light performance. In either case, the OV40A can consistently capture the highest quality images for different resolution video modes through fast mode switch.

Output formats include 40MP at 30 fps, 10MP with 4C binning at 120 fps, 4K2K video at 60 fps and 1080p video at 240 fps. All of these formats can be captured with phase-detection autofocus. Other features include a CPHY interface, multi-camera sync and a 34.7 degree chief ray angle.
